| SAVE OUR SEALS |
| STORM Storm is a grey seal pup, who was rescued on the 21st December 2003. There had been many pup strandings due to a North west gale and a sea surge, some pups had been washed over two miles away from the colony. We had received several phone calls concerning two seal grey pups seen on the beach at the Winterton Haul-out and had decided to wait to see if either of their mums would return. By the 21st of December 2003, with the weather still stormy, we decided it was time to check on both pups. The first seal pup (Bongo) was easy to find, he was waiting for us at the top of the slipway near the car park. |
| Harry stayed with Bongo, whilst Sheryl, Mariko, Joyce and Barry spread out, walking slowly along the beach searching for the other injured pup. Although it was a lovely dry crisp winter day, with the sun out, the wind was strong and the sea was very rough!! After about 1½ miles the rescue team found Storm and realised that they had left the blankets and container with Harry. Mariko and Joyce walked back to collect them from Harry. Barry and Sheryl stayed with Storm, Sheryl protecting the pup with her coat. When Mariko and Joyce returned with container, Sheryl and Barry had problems getting Storm into the container as she was so big. |
|
| As the rescue team were between Horsey and Winterton, Barry and Sheryl decided to take the injured seal pup to the coastguard station whilst Mariko and Joyce returned to the car park to drive, with Harry, to the coastguard car park. It took nearly 40 minutes to carry Storm to the car park, but Harry and the rest of the team were waiting with the car and soon Storm was back at the hospital, in one of the new pens. Storm was about 80lbs and about 4-5 weeks old. She was found to have injured flippers and had at some time lost blood from the back part of her body. | |
