Hospital (Save Our Seals) News Update - 8th February 2009 |
|
Our local Grey Seal Colony has dispersed over the last month or so including most of the pups. We have received over 40 calls as the pups have started their journey away from their birth place, some had moved off the dunes onto roads and even golf courses, as much as 30 miles away from their original beach. With a rescue team made up of Mark, James, Kevin, Harry and a 4x4, we were kept very busy. We had to pick up 6 from the beach, 3 had been bitten by dogs, all were treated with antibiotics. Danny the largest pup, 3/4 weeks old and weighing 60lb, was released back later with Storm who was now catching his own fish and weighed over 50lbs (Now 3 months old). Other seals that the rescue team came across were moved back to the edge of sea. At Sea Palling some of the pups had managed to fall into some deeper ruts in the sand (3-4 feet deep) which had been made by the heavy machinery in the area. Luckily with help from some of the local people, we managed to get them out and then we erected some warning notices "DANGER SEALS CROSSING", which we hope will warn the contractors about the local seal pups. All the seals in our hospital have been released apart from:- Marie - 52lbs Skip - Now 70lbs Bobby - Over 70lbs Buster - 50lbs Charlie - 48lbs Dougie - 38lbs All the problems last year have increased the cost of running the rescue centre and now we are worried about how long we can continue. To those of you who have donated money before, many thanks, please continue to help us, those of you who have thought about donating money, now is the time, we really need your help! To any people who live locally, why not come and help us, volunteer when you can, it is not just those who want to go out and rescue seals, there is so much more that needs to be done at the hospital! |
