ALFIE
Alfie is a Common Seal who was rescued from Cromer Beach on the 26th July 2002. He was in a poor condition, and could hardly move. He was protected on the beach by Lifeguards and a beach Inspector, to keep the crowds of people back, until the rescue team arrived.
Alfie’s condition on arrival at hospital was poor and he was weak, temperature 38.7, bleeding from mouth ulcers, wound on his nose and a discharge from his eyes. His temperature increased to a danger level of 39.3 so we started him on intensive care. He was given rehydration salts fed into mouth by tube, medication twice a day for 7 days, wounds dressed twice a day – this nursing and fish shop continued for 2 weeks. Alfie started to eat fish on his own, but he still had a high temperature, this slowly reduced by individual attention by one person for 6 weeks – to date 1 January 2003 he is loveable seal weighing approx. 50 lbs. PDV vaccinated 10 August 2002.
(He wrote a letter to the Eastern Daily Press dated 29 July 2003 – photocopies on request from Marine Centre).
